If you're playing Borderlands 4 on PC and want to get the best performance possible, you've come to the right place. This PC Optimization Guide helps determine which in-game settings will get you the optimal performance and best possible frame rates using Upscaling, based on your PC's graphics card.
Please note: at present, this PC Optimization Guide applies specifically to NVIDIA graphics cards. We're working to get updated settings for AMD graphics cards; in the meantime, those with an AMD graphics card can consult the AMD Optimization Guide created when Borderlands 4 first launched.
Here are the steps to optimize Borderlands 4's performance on your PC:
- Boot up Borderlands 4, then go to the Visuals tab of the Options menu. In the Advanced tab under "General," click the "Run Auto-Detect" button next to "Auto-Detect Graphics Preset." This will set the graphics settings that best suit your PC's particular hardware.
- To further optimize your graphics settings with an NVIDIA graphics card, download and install the NVIDIA App.
- After you've installed the NVIDIA App, make sure to also download and install the latest GeForce Game Ready Driver for your NVIDIA graphics card, accessible via the Drivers panel in the NVIDIA App.
- Once you've installed the latest driver, switch to the Graphics tab of the NVIDIA App. Find Borderlands 4 in your Programs library, then use the Optimize button so the NVIDIA App can automatically detect and implement the ideal graphics settings that'll get the best performance out of your PC.
Even after you've optimized your graphics settings via the NVIDIA App, you may want to make further tweaks. Using the dropdown menus below, you can view the individual settings that NVIDIA recommends for its RTX graphics cards at a variety of resolutions:
- Choose a graphics card
- Choose an Upscaled resolution - 1080p, 1440p, or 4K, depending on your graphics card
- Manually adjust the graphics settings in Borderlands 4 to match the recommend settings for your graphics card
These are settings designed to get you an average 60 FPS or higher on most GPU setups when paired with an appropriate CPU.* To make even more granular tweaks, we recommend lowering these specific settings first if you're looking to further boost your frame rates:
- Shadow Quality
- Lighting Quality
- Volumetric Cloud / Volumetric Cloud Shadows

*Excluding RTX 3050, which has an expected average of 30-60 FPS. Recommended settings should accommodate most setups, but do not comprehensively cover every possible combination of GPU, VRAM, and CPU components.
